How to Accurately Calculate the Flooring Size for Your Project

When planning a flooring project, one of the most important steps is to accurately calculate the amount of flooring material you will need. This ensures you purchase enough materials without overspending or underestimating. At Patchwork Flooring, we understand that not everyone is a flooring expert, so we’ve developed a simple and effective flooring size calculator to help you determine the precise amount of flooring required for your space.

*Please note our carpets come in either 4 or 5 meter widths.

Why Accurate Measurement is Crucial

Accurate measurement is crucial for several reasons:

  • Cost Efficiency: Buying the right amount of flooring saves money by preventing over-purchasing.

  • Seamless Installation: Ensuring you have enough material avoids delays during installation.

  • Consistent Appearance: Matching dye lots and patterns are easier when you order the correct amount at once.

Using the Flooring Size Calculator

Our flooring size calculator is designed to be user-friendly and provides quick results with just a few inputs. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use it:

  1. Measure the Area: Begin by measuring the length and width of the area where you plan to install the flooring. Use a tape measure to get the most accurate measurements in meters. Record these numbers.

  2. Input the Measurements: Enter the length and width measurements into the flooring size calculator. Ensure the measurements are in meters for accurate calculation.

  3. Calculate the Area: The calculator will multiply the length by the width to give you the total area in square meters. This is the amount of flooring you will need to cover the space completely.

Example Calculation

Let’s say you are installing flooring in a room that is 5 meters long and 4 meters wide. Here’s how the calculation works:

  • Length: 5 meters

  • Width: 4 meters

  • Area: Length x Width = 5m x 4m = 20 square meters

You will need 20 square meters of flooring to cover this room.

Tips for Accurate Measurement

  • Round Up: Always round up your measurements to ensure you have enough material. It’s better to have a little extra than to run short.

  • Include All Areas: Don’t forget to measure closets, alcoves, and other nooks and crannies.

  • Account for Waste: It’s wise to add an extra 10% to your total measurement to account for cuts, mistakes, and future repairs.
